BestInterest is a co-parenting app built for high-conflict communication. Its best-known paid feature, Message Shield on Protect and up, filters harmful language from incoming messages and can show you a calmer version first, while keeping the original. People look for an alternative when they want to compare prices, when they need a different kind of record, or when the history that matters is already sitting in months of text messages.
Here is a fair look at what it includes, when it is the better pick, and what else fits. The facts come from the BestInterest website, its pricing page and its support FAQ, checked October 28, 2026. We have not used or tested it. Check again before you buy. Prices and features change.
What BestInterest includes
- Message Shield. Filters harmful language out of incoming messages before you read them. The original is kept, and you choose whether to open it. Listed on Protect and up.
- Tone Guardian and coaching. A review of your reply before you send it (Protect and up), plus coaching sessions on every plan.
- Solo Mode and Boundary Line. You can use it without your co-parent joining. On Connect and up, your co-parent can keep texting a private number with nothing to download.
- Shared tools. A calendar, tasks, expense tracking and a private journal on every plan. Its pricing table lists the document binder and outgoing in-app calls on Connect and up, and incoming calls on Free. Call recording and transcripts are on Protect Plus.
- Records. Data exports on every plan, verified reports (10 a month on Connect, unlimited on Protect), and a portal where a professional you choose sees what you share.
- Four plans. Free with no expiration; Connect $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year; Protect $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year; Protect Plus $29.99 a month or $299.99 a year. Each paid plan has a 2-week free trial, and qualifying parents who need Protect features but can't afford a paid plan can apply for a fee waiver.
- Where it runs. Android, iPhone, the web, iPad and Mac.
If new messages are the problem, and reading them is wearing you down, a filter like this can fit well. Its Protect plan lists $14.99 a month; our Full Suite lists $24.99 a month.
When another option may fit better
| Your situation | Why a messaging app may not be the whole answer |
|---|---|
| Your history is months of texts or WhatsApp | A messaging app records what comes in after you set it up. Texts already on your phone can be exported and numbered in one log instead |
| You want to pay once, not monthly | Some tools sell a single log or download with no subscription |
| You only need a printable log | Free printable logs and a free text-log preview exist with no signup |
| A court order names a co-parenting app | Use the app the order names. A clerk, self-help center, or licensed attorney where you live can confirm what your order requires |
Filtering new messages or logging old ones?
The two tools work on different parts of the record. A messaging app like BestInterest handles what happens from here on: new messages, calls and schedule changes, kept in one place. A text log starts from what is already on your phone: the whole past conversation, exported and numbered, with both sides in order. Many parents use both: one app for new messages, and one numbered log for the history before it. Our co-parenting apps comparison lays out the main options side by side.
Questions to ask before you pick any co-parenting app
- What do I need help with most? Reading hard new messages, or organizing the history that already exists.
- What does the free plan cover? Check which features and exports are free, and which need a paid plan.
- Does my co-parent need to do anything? Check whether they must download an app, accept an invite, or pay.
- Can I get my records out? Check the export formats, and whether you keep access after you stop paying.
- Does my order name an app? If it does, ask the clerk or a licensed attorney where you live which tool you must use.
None of these questions has one right answer for every family. Write down your answers, then compare tools against them.
If you're in danger, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788 (thehotline.org).
When the record is texts you already have
If the history you need is in your phone, export the conversation and number it. A clear log usually has:
- Who: each sender's name or number on every message.
- When: a date and time on every message.
- Both sides, in order, for the stretch you print.
- Page numbers, so a person can find one page quickly.
- The originals kept on your phone.
Courts differ on exhibit format. The clerk, a self-help center, or a licensed attorney where you live can tell you what yours expects. Nothing on this page tells you what to file, or how a judge will see it.
A private option for texts and files
Custody Commander takes an export you already have, from an iPhone, an Android phone, or WhatsApp, and turns it into a chronological, numbered PDF log (MSG-00001 onward) with an index page. It runs in a web browser on any phone or computer. The other parent does not create an account and is not notified.
- Free preview first. The free text message log preview numbers the texts in your browser. Your texts never leave your device.
- A free plan that doesn't expire, with no card.
- One log for $39, no subscription, when you need the full PDF.
- Or the Full Suite, $24.99 a month or $199 a year, which keeps the log with your evidence, timeline, and case files. The Full Suite is free for 7 days and a card is required for that trial.
It is self-help software. It organizes the messages and files you provide. It does not decide what to file or how a court will treat them.
