What’s in the calendar
If a protective order or a safety plan covers exchanges, follow the order and your safety plan first. A calendar on a shared phone, computer or cloud account can show someone else where you and your child will be. A local domestic violence advocate can help you plan safe exchanges.
If you’re in danger, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788 (thehotline.org).
- A key pageWho A and B stand for, the pattern as your order or agreement words it, the exchange day, time and place, holidays and school breaks, and agreed swaps with the date you agreed them.
- 2026 at a glanceAll twelve months on one landscape page, weeks Sunday to Saturday, with a “Nights A / B” line under each month and a year total.
- 2027 at a glanceThe same layout for next year, so a schedule that runs across New Year stays on paper.
- A blank month pageBig boxes for one month with no dates filled in. Print it for any month or year, or for a month with a lot of changes.
- The spreadsheetA Start here sheet with the key, then a 2026 and a 2027 sheet. Type A or B in the row under each date: A turns orange, B turns blue.
- Totals that count themselvesNights A and B for each month and for the year, and each parent’s share of the nights you marked. Arithmetic only, no state rules.
How to fill it in
Layout tips only. They don’t say which schedule to choose or how a court decides; your order, your court’s rules and a licensed attorney where you live can answer that.
- Fill in the key first.Write who A is and who B is, and copy the pattern the way your order or written agreement words it, so the calendar matches the wording in your order or written agreement.
- Mark nights, not days.Put the letter of the parent the child sleeps at that night. For this calendar, mark the night with the letter of the parent whose home the child sleeps at (for example, after a 6 pm Friday pickup, mark Friday with that parent’s letter). Your order or court may count time differently.
- Use pencil or two highlighters. On paper, a swap is easy to change. In the spreadsheet, type A or B and the colour follows; delete the letter to clear it.
- Write swaps down with the date you agreed.Add each agreed change to the key, with the date and how it was agreed, for example “by text on March 3.”
- Add holidays and school breaks.Mark them on the key page before the year starts. Our holiday schedule article lists the ones families most often plan for.
- Check the totals once a month. The count under each month shows whether the calendar matches the schedule you meant to write down. If it doesn’t, look for a missed or doubled night.

Questions about the custody calendar
Is the custody calendar template free?
Yes. The printable PDF and the Excel file are free downloads with no signup and no email. The spreadsheet opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers and LibreOffice.
Can I use it in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx file to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. The A and B colours and the overnight totals keep working there.
How does it count overnights?
You type one letter, A or B, under each date for the parent the child stays with that night. The spreadsheet counts the A and B marks for each month and for the year, and shows each parent’s share of the nights you marked. It is simple arithmetic: how your order, your state or your court counts parenting time, for example for child support, can be different.
Which custody schedule should I put on it?
The calendar doesn’t suggest one. Write the schedule the way your order or written agreement words it. If you want to see how common patterns such as 2-2-3, 2-2-5-5, alternating weeks or every other weekend lay out over a year, the free parenting time calculator draws them and counts the overnights. For advice about which schedule fits your situation, talk with a licensed attorney or a mediator where you live.
Do the weeks start on Sunday?
Yes. Every month runs Sunday to Saturday, the usual US wall-calendar layout, for all of 2026 and 2027. A blank month page is included for any other month or year.
Is my information uploaded anywhere?
No. These are blank files you download. What you write stays in the file on your device, unless you choose to save it to a cloud service yourself. If someone else can open your phone, computer or cloud account, keep the calendar somewhere only you can reach.
Is this a court form or legal advice?
No. It is a planning and record-keeping calendar. It is not a court-approved form and doesn’t say what schedule to ask for, what to file, or how a court decides. Court rules and forms differ by state and county, so check your court’s self-help center or talk with a licensed attorney where you live.
A planning and record-keeping calendar, not legal advice and not a court form. For advice about your situation, talk with a licensed attorney where you live. More free downloads are on the free templates page.
A calendar shows the plan. Your records show what happened.
When you also need to keep the texts, photos and records about missed or late exchanges, the free Custody Commander plan keeps each file and its details together in one case file: up to 10 evidence items and 1 GB of storage, where you can date, describe, tag and search each item, read the text out of a screenshot for you to check against the image, and download a numbered PDF list (watermarked on the free plan). It includes 6 AI actions to try things (one-time, not monthly), needs no card and never expires. Paid plans add unlimited evidence items and exports without the watermark.
